W hen Philippa was 17, growing up in a small Peak District community, there was only one driving instructor in the village. But her lessons became uncomfortable. In the past fortnight, I have heard from 20 women and one man who were sexually harassed or assaulted by their driving instructors. Their experiences bear a series of striking hallmarks: almost all were young and inexperienced at the time; they all describe feeling vulnerable and powerless, trapped in a car in a potentially dangerous situation, with no witnesses present and an older man in a position of power over them. Several tried to tell their families what had happened, only to be disbelieved or told not to make a fuss. Some tried to report their instructor to the driving school, but were brushed off or ignored. And for many, the long-term impact was severe. Philippa, like many of the others, never learned to drive.

Driving instructors who strike up inappropriate relationships with young learner drivers face being banned from teaching, following new rules from the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency DVSA. The DVSA reports that there were investigations into instructor misconduct between April and March , although that represents only a small fraction of the 39, licensed instructors in the Great Britain.
The new rules mean instructors found to have had an inappropriate relationship with a young student face being removed from the approved driving instructor ADI register, effectively banning them from giving lessons. This includes using sexualised language, making unnecessary physical contact, making inappropriate contact and sending indecent messages or images to pupils. Want to learn how to drive? Participants learn ways to build a foundation of knowledge and skills for a lifetime of safe driving. Currently, the moment learners gain their provisional P licence and drive unsupervised, their risk of being in a crash where someone is hurt increases about thirty times. This risk remains high until it gradually decreases after six to twelve months of solo driving.
Keys2drive works with learner drivers and their parents or supervisors to help new drivers learn how to be safer solo drivers before they drive solo. Supervising drivers learn first how to share and then gradually and safely let go of control of the vehicle. Progressively, learner drivers learn to take control and safely navigate the early stages of solo driving, aiming for six months with zero harm.

And, unfortunately, there are some driving instructors you should avoid. Some of the qualities are objective and non-negotiable: any driving instructor with these faults is automatically bad news. Others are personality traits. Every instructor will fall somewhere on a sliding scale with these, and some of them may not indicate a bad instructor per se —just that they may be a bad fit for you. All DVSA-approved instructors have had a certain amount of tuition on how to teach others to drive, and have had to pass various exams proving their competence as an instructor.

The UK could see a major national shortage of driving instructors in the second half of and beyond. Many learner drivers are now back on the road after lessons were suspended because of the coronavirus crisis. Some , tests were cancelled and tens of thousands more were delayed because of the virus, according to the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency DVSA said. That’s according to car insurance provider Marmalade , whose research suggests it could prove difficult to find an instructor with space for new learners over the coming months — particularly as more people choose to move away from using public transport.
The researchers looked at the potential number of new young learners based on the amount of people turning years-old each year against the number of registered approved driving instructors ADIs.

By Chris Pleasance. A young woman has escaped injury after a hit-and-run driver smashed into her car while she was taking her driving test. The student, who has not been named, was taking her first test in rush-hour traffic when the accident happened. The test was abandoned and police were called. Officers said the collision happened on the roundabout near the Asda supermarket in Bradford Road, Brackenhall, West Yorkshire, at 8.
The student set off on her test at 8. Holmfirth-based driving instructor Dave Reilly had dropped the student at Huddersfield Test Centre for the first test of the day at 8. Mr Reilly said his student was shocked but unhurt. It is believed the examiner, a woman, suffered slight neck injuries. Pete Tiernan, chairman of Huddersfield Driving Instructors’ Association, said the test would not count against the girl.
Nothing like this has happened to me before. Mr Reilly was still waiting to hear how much damage had been caused to his car but a replacement vehicle would keep him on the road.
