In all, 38 libraries will be open for public access and will also offer limited use of PCs in the library buildings. Customers can also continue to make use of the new Ready Reads service where the library team selects books based on individual preferences. Lightwater will open for the Click and Collect service from Wednesday 2 September and will progress to browsing from Monday 14 September. To ensure the library remains a safe space to prevent the spread of Coronavirus, a range of measures have been introduced. These include limits on the number of visitors at any one time, 2 metre social distancing measures, cleaning of PCs between use and the quarantining of returned stock for 72 hours before items are reissued. Enhanced cleaning will be taking place throughout the day in open library buildings. Face coverings must be worn inside all library buildings, in line with current Government guidance. Please check opening times before visiting, as these may vary from previous hours.

Ultrasound is a type of diagnostic medical imaging system which uses sound waves above the threshold of hearing to capture live images from within your body. It is painless and used in most soft tissue areas of the body. It is most well-known for its use in pregnancy. Your doctor, midwife or physio will refer you to have an ultrasound scan to help with the diagnosis of a condition or to assess your baby during pregnancy. A sonographer is a medical professional who performs the scan and a radiologist is a doctor who specialises in reporting the scan findings.
The report will go back to your referrer.

Generally, it is very rare for clinically significant hypermagnesemia to develop in an individual with normal renal functions as the renal handling of serum magnesium is a very potent process and it has the capacity, under conditions of hypermagnesemia, to completely block Mg magnesium reabsorption from the thick ascending limb of Henle. Therefore, hypermagnesemia usually arises in the setting of renal failure.
We present a very rare case of a year-old African American obese female with prior normal renal functions, who presented post-cardiac arrest following accidental overdose of Epsom salt. The patient was initially given supportive therapy and was later considered for the dialysis despite normal renal functions, as serum Mg levels kept on creeping up and clinical status kept on deteriorating continuously. Seemingly harmless magnesium containing over-the-counter OTC can potentially be lethal, and such consequences must always be taken into account when using such medications for a prolonged period of time.
The active ingredient in Epsom salt is magnesium sulfate MgSO4. Mg is the second most abundant intracellular cation and has essential physiological roles in the body 1. Mg has widespread therapeutic uses such as in the management of torsades de pointes, asthma exacerbation and eclampsia. However, life threatening consequences can occur if the serum Mg levels rise to toxic range.
Its homeostasis is dependent on its gastrointestinal absorption and renal excretion 2. As its diffusion across the gut is mainly a passive process, therefore, kidneys play more important role in the regulation of serum magnesium by altering its reabsorption process and with normal renal functions clinically significant hypermagnesemia usually does not develop. Here we present a case of fatal hypermagnesemia following accidental overdose with Epsom salt in a patient with normal renal functions, which brings into attention the fact that a seemingly harmless magnesium containing OTC medication, can potentially be lethal.

Those are the heartbreaking words of a mother whose son suffered serious brain damage as a result of an “easily avoided” hospital staff error. The toddler underwent brain scans which revealed he had suffered kernicterus, a rare kind of brain damage caused by untreated jaundice in newborn babies. The now nine-year-old boy, who can only be referred to as “OXS” for legal reasons, was born in and following checks was sent home later that same day.
However, no arrangements to see OXS were made by the midwife but his c ondition improved over the following days. It was then confirmed that he had suffered jaundice in the days after his birth, which led to his brain injury and saw him develop cerebral palsy. The Trust admitted that OXS should not have been sent home without the results of the blood test being known; if he had remained in hospital the boy would not have suffered his injuries.
The money will pay for the round-the-clock care the boy will require for the rest of his life, as well as specialist therapies and equipment he requires. It will also fund an adapted home; OXS will never be able to live independently and has a shortened life expectancy.
